The federal government will spend $9 million upgrading 39 airports in remote communities.

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss on Friday said the communities that will share in the funding include Bathurst Island and Maningrida in the Northern Territory.

Country Liberals Senator Nigel Scullion welcomed the news, saying it will help stem disadvantage.

"Increasingly, we depend on our airstrip for delivery of everyday goods and services, including medical care and supplies," he said in a statement.

"A fully functioning airstrip helps to stem the disadvantage that distance can inflict on our community, so making sure it is open and serviceable at all times is a priority."

Mr Scullion said the upgrades would ensure aviation safety obligations were up to scratch and that air services like the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Australia Post and freight could continue.
