Regent honeyeater edges towards extinction

Two native Australian birds have been listed as critically endangered.

The regent honeyeater, endemic to southeastern Australia, now has a wild population of about 400, the federal government says.

Population estimates on the plains-wanderer, a quail-like bird scattered across eastern Australia, range from 2000 to 7500.
