Red-tops unite for Ginger pride rally in Melbourne

Ravishing red-heads, strawberry blondes and loud and proud ‘rangas’ have descended in Melbourne’s CBD for the annual Ginger Pride Rally.

The Red and Nearly Ginger Association (RANGA) along with Buderim Ginger hosted the tangerine-tressed event at Federation Square this morning with hundreds in attendance.

The passionate group marched to celebrate “uniqueness and diversity” before engaging in a festival with free ginger beer, games of “ginger beer pong”, a photo booth and ginger speed dating.

The best-dressed ginger or redhead will win prizes including a year's supply of Buderim Ginger Beer.

Event organiser and digital manager at Buderim Emma Pryor, who is a natural blonde, said she feels “ginger by proxy”.

She said the Melbourne rally was set up after a number of similar events worldwide.

“It’s not designed to say, ‘we’re gingers and no one else can come’ it’s about celebrating diversity,” she told 9NEWS.

Non-redheads are also invited, but must attend with a ginger friend and are asked to apply temporary hair colour available at the event or wear an orange wig.

“I love gingers and people with red hair but I’m blonde myself unfortunately,” one woman clad in a red wig said.

“I find them attractive because of their fiery hair… they’re gorgeous.”
