Firefighters control large recycling tip blaze

Fire crews have extinguished a recycling tip fire near the Eastlink freeway in Wantirna South, east of Melbourne.

Firefighters and more than twenty appliances arrived at the blaze on Cathies Lane just before 2pm.

The fire spread to adjoining grass and scrub, issuing thick smoke throughout the area and triggering an Advice warning for locals.

After battling the blaze for more than two hours, the fire was deemed under control just after 4.40pm, the Country Fire Authority said in an official statement. 

It remains unclear what has sparked the fire.
