Some jars of Vicks VapoRub have been recalled after they were mistakenly filled with a stronger version that can cause rashes and blisters.

The labelling mishap means some 100g jars of Vicks VapoRub Xtra Strong have been incorrectly labelled as Vicks VapoRub.

The product is an ointment aimed at relieving cough and cold symptoms.

The Xtra Strong version can cause allergic reactions in some people, such as rashes, blisters, hives, peeling, itching or swelling, the makers Procter & Gamble Australia said.

Children aged six to ten are also at risk of adverse reactions from steam inhalation, it added.
