‘Alarming’: Police operation nabs 110 drink drivers on stretch of road

A two-night police operation which caught more than 100 drink drivers along a stretch of Sydney road has alarmed authorities ahead of the holiday season.

Operation Nab involved a total of 150 police officers, strategically placed at every exit along Sydney's Harbour Bridge, M2 and M7 motorway.

Early on the first night, highway patrol officer Adrian Gretch told A Current Affair he had already had six people brought back for driving.

"Well, the night has just started, so I'm actually a bit shocked," he said.

"The danger aspect of it is a lot of these people have driven from the city in a 100km/hr zone, and they're at mid-range."

One man allegedly tested positive to drugs, and was riding a stolen motorbike.

Officers said another driver, a nurse, tried to drive straight through the RBT.

Chief Inspector Phil Brooks said the key element was "selfish driver behaviour".

"More than 30 years of breath-testing, people know about it, red and blue lights," he said.

"It's been going for a long time, but still they've made that very selfish decision to get behind the wheel."

A P-plater who failed a breath test said he had come from a work Christmas party.

"I've got no explanation for it," he said.

"Stupid, very stupid."

Across the two-night crackdown, Operation Nab caught 110 drink drivers.

"Those statistics are very alarming," Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said.

"We want to send a message, particularly coming into Christmas, and particularly after the bad year we had last year with our road toll over the Christmas period, we want to send a really strong message to the public that we are not going to accept that this year."
