Ray Warren set to retire at end of 2016 NRL season

Legendary rugby league commentator Ray Warren is set to hang up the microphone at the end of this NRL season.

Warren, 72, indicated he is likely to retire as it coincides with his 50th season as a caller.

"Fifty and out. I like that," Warren told Fairfax Media.

"I'm thinking this season will be it for me, I'm thinking that way.

"In fact, I'd be happy to get through the year, to be honest."

The man known as "Rabs" cited ongoing health issues as the main reason, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011.

He has not entirely ruled out continuing beyond this year, but only "if he can".

Warren began commentating for 2LF Radio in Young in 1966, and has commentated for the Nine Network since 1988.

Known as "the voice of rugby league", Warren has also called swimming and Commonwealth Games events over the years.
