Mountain View Farm recalls deadly raw milk after ACCC steps in

The raw cows milk connected to the death of one toddler and the hospitalisation of several other children earlier this week has been recalled, the ACCC has said.

"Mountain View Farm Organic Bath Milk has been linked to a number of recent health concerns in young children after being used as a substitute for regular pasteurised milk," ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said.

"The message from health agencies is clear: do not drink unpasteurised milk."

The company has issued a recall of its raw milk products following the ACCC's intervention.

The milk was marketed and sold as bath milk, with labels warning against drinking.

However, there have been concerns the warnings were not prominent enough.

A three-year-old child from Mornington Peninsula in Victoria died after drinking Mountain View Farm's bath milk in the past month.

Four other young children have been hospitalised after drinking the same product.

"The sale of unpasteurised milk for human consumption is illegal in Victoria. However, all five cases drank unpasteurised milk sold as 'bath' or 'cosmetic' milk," said Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester.

"It is part of the movement that (believes) if something is raw and natural it must be good. But … no matter how carefully it is produced, raw milk can contain harmful bacteria and parasites."
