A rare 1970 Rennmax race car worth $320,000 has been stolen from a factory in southeast Melbourne.

The yellow race car, with Repco Brabham engine used by Sir Jack Brabham to win the world championship, was taken in a trailer from the Henderson Road premises at Rowville some time between December 21 and December 22.

The fully-restored vehicle and engine are worth around $320,000, police say.

The empty trailer was found on Christmas Day in Cape Wollamai, on the south eastern tip of Phillip Island.

The race car cannot be registered and police have appealed for public help to find the missing car.
