Rapper, music producer and fashion designer Kanye West has capped a lengthy, rambling acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards with an announcement that he plans to run for the US presidency in 2020.

West took the stage to accept the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and let fly with an impassioned 13-minute rant on the nature of the music industry, awards shows and art.

His rant ended with his bombshell announcement and a classic mic drop.

“It’s about ideas, bro, new ideas!” West said to rapturous applause.

“People with ideas! People who believe in truth!

“As you have probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

Twitter users were quick to point out West’s speech began with a declaration he “ain’t no politician”.

West was presented with the award by Taylor Swift, whom the rapper infamously upstaged in 2009 by interrupting her acceptance speech at the same ceremony.
