Splendour in the Grass now Splendour in the Mud

Splendour in the Grass has been unofficially renamed this year after being turned into a festival of mud.

In scenes reminiscent of Glastonbury’s muddiest moments, Byron Bay’s festival this weekend has been rebranded Splendour in the Mud on social media with thousands enjoying the filthy surrounds as much as the music.

Brisbane woman Sarah Jones says she has forgone the final day of the festival because the “mud is too hectic”.

“People are being carted out on golf carts,” Ms Jones told ninemsn.

“If you've got a hurt leg, (the trend is to) wrap it in a garbage bag and keep on trucking.”

Social media has been swamped with images and video of mud-caked revellers wading at times ankle-deep through mud pits.

Gumboots are de rigueur, paired with an essential devil-may-care attitude that has seen festivalgoers wholeheartedly embrace the elements and make the mud part of the fun.

The festival has warned crowds to be patient when leaving the venue, posting on its Facebook page for people to “please take care when walking around the festival site”.

A screen at last night’s headline performance by Florence and the Machine included the ominous warning “slippery when wet”.

And there is a chance conditions will only worsen today with a 60 percent chance of showers as the main stage hosts Royal Blood, Tame Impala and Blur to close the festival.
