Rain affecting Clipsal 500 Adelaide, severe thunderstorm warning issued for north and west SA

Rain is affecting the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, and a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for SA’s northern and western regions this afternoon.

“Showers and thunderstorms developing north of Adelaide tracking south towards @Clipsal500,” the Bureau of Meteorology warned on Twitter, as crowds flocked to the city’s major V8 supercar racing event earlier this afternoon. 

The wet weather has since arrived, organisers advised via Twitter.

There was spray on the track and a delayed start to Race 1 due to some cars not making it back to the grid after warm-up.

A severe thunderstorm warning has also been issued for SA’s northern and western regions, with possible heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WIND

For people in the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, North West Pastoral and parts of the Yorke Peninsula and North East Pastoral districts.

Issued at 2:05 pm Sunday, 6 March 2016.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h in the warning area this afternoon and evening. Locations which may be affected include Nullarbor, Elliston, Clare, Hawker, and Marla. 

The State Emergency Service advises that people should: 
* Secure or put away loose items around your property. 
* Move cars under cover or away from trees. 
* Keep clear of fallen power lines. 
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water. 
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. 
* Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.
