‘Stop the carnage’: Radical proposals to halt deadly road toll

In the wake of the tragic death of actress Jessica Falkholt in hospital, a victims support advocate says a new approach is needed to keep habitual driving offenders off the road.

Falkholt died yesterday, weeks after a horrific Boxing Day car crash that killed her parents Lars and Vivian and fatally injured her sister Annabelle.

The Falkholt car collided with one driven by Craig Whitall, who had multiple driving convictions.

Whitall was also killed in the crash.

Victims of Crime Assistance League head Howard Brown said a new approach had to be tried.

"We have to do something to reduce the carnage because the carnage is just getting worse," he said.

Mr Brown said lengthy driving bans didn't deter people from getting behind the wheel, nor jail sentences of less than a year.

He proposed submitting offenders to an "intensive correction order".

"So they don't go to jail but they are placed in programs to deal with their offending behaviour," he said.

"If they indicate by their actions that they are not going to learn from an intensive correction order (then) three strikes you're out, you go to jail (for) five years.

"As a community we are then assured for at least the next five years, they are not going to kill our loved ones."

He also proposed habitual offenders wear ankle tracking bracelets with a few extra applications.

"If we see the bracelet is indicating that they're in the car and we know they're disqualified, we can identify them and we can pull them over and if that means we send them to jail for 10 years, we get them off the road."
