An Australian defence plane has overshot a runway in Afghanistan.

No one was injured but the C-130J Hercules aircraft needed to be towed away for inspection after the incident at Kabul International Airport on Wednesday night (AEST).

The aircraft came to a halt about 70 metres from the runway's end.

The RAAF has launched an investigation.

Defence issued a statement saying safety is its top priority for air operations.

"Air force aircraft are serviced and flown under a very strict and controlled airworthiness and safety system," it said.

"All aircraft are under constant surveillance to ensure that they maintain the highest standards."
