The federal government believes using remote parts of Australia to dump nuclear waste is more a question of practicality, not ideology.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt said the world is "looking for solutions" when it comes to storing spent nuclear fuel rods, but is waiting to see the conclusions of South Australia's royal commission.

"I think it's a practical question, not an ideological question ... We approach this with an open mind," Mr Hunt told ABC's Insiders program on Sunday.
