Queenslanders to be fined for not bringing in wheelie bins

Queenslanders who don’t bring their kerbside rubbish bins in after a day could soon be fined.

The fine, up to $2500, has always been in the state legislation, but not widely enforced.

Now, the government will allow councils to enforce the laws and while some have ignored it, at least 20 councils have indicated they plan to implement it.

Ipswich Council will set its fine at $126, Moreton Bay will impose $252 penalties, while Logan and Gold Coast City councils are yet to release their figures.

Brisbane City Council has long had its own laws, with fines ranging from $126 to $1200.

Brisbane residents today told 9NEWS they simply wouldn’t pay the fine, with one man saying he’d rather go to jail.

The state legislation largely relied on neighbours dobbing each other in, but will now be at council discretion.
