Rural firefighters were recruited from surrounding towns and interstate, while locals used their own machinery in an effort to keep the fire at bay as it approached from two directions.
"We saw that peak in fire activity where there was an immediate risk to life and property," Rural Fire Service Queensland acting chief officer Ben Millington said.
The evacuation order remained in place this morning as Mayor Samantha O'Toole addressed residents.

"We're not completely out of the woods as far as the fire is concerned," O'Toole said.
Locals who had remained in the town were left cut off.
"We've got no fuel, no food, no power, no cold water and no electricity," one resident said.
Premier David Crisafulli said resources would be sent to the community in an effort to support residents.
