Queensland declares Adelaide a coronavirus hotspot

Queensland has declared Adelaide a coronavirus hotspot as South Australia deals with a new cluster of cases.

From 11.59pm tonight, people travelling to Queensland from Adelaide will face mandatory hotel quarantine upon arrival.

Anybody who has been in Adelaide since last Monday (November 9) must also get tested and self-isolate immediately for 14 days.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the large number of flights from Adelaide to Brisbane was a concern.

"We hope everything does go will in Adelaide but we do need to have these directions in place and we will be monitoring it very closely," she said.

Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said the restrictions were necessary while the scale of the outbreak is being determined.

"It's a very rapid increase in cases from four to 17," she said.

"Some of those cases I understand have been in complex situations, one in a prison for instance, there's a school involved, so we need to get more information about where the risks are.

More than 700 people have flown from Adelaide to Queensland in the past seven days, including Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and the entire Queensland cricket team.

The decision to close borders to Adelaide comes just a day before gathering restrictions are set to ease in Queensland.
