Queensland taxi drivers no longer need to complete English testing

Taxi drivers in Queensland will no longer have to complete English and geography exams after the state government removed the need for testing.

Taxi Council Queensland has criticised the state government for removing the tests, saying in a statement it was a “poorly thought-out”.

“The changes are a poorly thought-out response to the introduction of ride-sharing services last month and the changes are not welcome,” a statement said.

"The taxi industry did not ask for and does not want lowering of standards," Mr Wash said.

Before the testing was scrapped, taxi drivers had to complete local geography training and sit through an English test if they planned to drive through a “major taxi area”.
