Lightning bolt blasts hole in Gold Coast family home

A lightning bolt has blasted a hole in a Gold Coast family's home during Queensland's wild storms overnight.

Paula Davis and her grandchildren were inside their Pimpama home when they heard an explosion.

"Well we thought we were going to have our tea," she told 9News.

"Next thing there was this big bang."

A lightning bolt had hit their TV antenna and sent the tiles flying off the roof.

The force of the bolt was so severe it blew every light fitting in the house and split plasterwork in the walls.

"The two children started crying and I tried to hold it together," Paula said.

After seeing the hole in their roof, the family called emergency services who managed to patch it with a tarp.

"My granddaughter's bedroom has filled up with water and the roof in the other bedroom has got a big bow in it," Paula said.

The family were one of 17 Gold Coast residents who contacted the SES last night for assistance.

82,500 lightning strikes were recorded in the area.
