Queensland deluge to cause outback flooding and road closures

A surging tropical storm will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to northwest and central Queensland the next few days, likely causing flooding and road closures.

The slow-moving tropical low pressure system is predicted to produce large amounts of rainfall across Queensland, starting with the northwest.

Century Mine and Burketown in far northwest Queensland were both lashed with rain yesterday.

Burketown recorded rainfall of 173mm, its highest daily total in eight years.

Weatherzone is predicting rain and storms to spread over large areas of northern and central parts of the state today and tomorrow.

But models are currently uncertain how deep into the southeast the system will move.

Heaviest rain over the coming days is expected in the northwest, with some towns near the northern Queensland-NT border facing a 400mm dumping.

"There is some disagreement between forecast models regarding where and how much rain will fall from this system, particularly for the southeast of the state," meteorologist Ben Domensino said.

One model predicts the heavy rain to hit as far south as Bundaberg and Tewantin.

Despite the uncertainty, broad areas in the northwest and central parts of the state will likely see enough rain to cause flooding over the next several days.

Some areas in these regions are already saturated from recent wet weather.
