Traffic controller killed in alleged hit-and-run in Mackay
When Brendan Moreland left for work in the early hours of this morning, no one anticipated he wouldn't be coming home.
The 35-year-old traffic controller had just started his shift in Mackay, in Central Queensland, and was laying traffic cones when he was fatally mowed down by an SUV that was allegedly stolen.
Witnesses said he was flown 50 metres from where he was standing on the Ron Camm bridge, with bystanders immediately coming to his aid.
They performed first aid however Mr Moreland was declared dead at the scene.

Queensland Police Service's Ian Horton confirmed that officers had arrested a 28-year-old Mackay man.
"When police attended the scene a vehicle that drove through was seen to have damage consistent with the crash of that nature," Mr Horton said.
The car had been sighted by police in another Mackay location before it was found.

Police officers deployed the dog squad to search for the man but he could not be found.
"It was after that the vehicle was reported stolen," Mr Horton said.
"We made several enquiries which led us to an address in the city area and we believe the person arrested was the driver of the vehicle at the time."

The 28-year-old man was arrested, however charges have not yet been laid.
"This was preventable, and we will do everything we can to stop this kind of driving behaviour from a police perspective," Mr Horton said.
Investigations are ongoing.
