Queensland Rail commuters encountered a surprise today when they arrived at the train stations to find the bins bolted shut.

It is the first time Queensland Rail has taken the drastic measure in the name of public safety.

The rail body said the move was in direct response to the terror threat being raised to ‘high’, not to do with the G20.

However, commuters were unimpressed.

Speaking to 9NEWS, they labelled the precaution “silly” and “ridiculous”.

The bins are closed from Bowen Hills to South Bank and Toowong.

Milton, Nerang and Robina's bins will be closed during special events only.
