Police urge Queenslanders to stay out of flooded waterways following Cyclone Marcia

While Cyclone Marcia has passed, Queensland police say significant dangers still remains and are urging residents to stay out of flooded creeks, rivers and waterways.

“Flooded creeks and rivers, fast flowing waterways and watercourses and churned up oceans are dangerous places to play,” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.

“A quick dip, a bit of fun, shouldn’t end it tragedy, and shouldn’t risk the lives of emergency service personnel.”

Queensland copped a soaking, meaning waterways are significantly up and some portions of Queensland and NSW remain flooded today.

Police have urged people to stay out of flood waters because they contain numerous hazard, including hidden trees and debris and even dead of decaying animals.

“Still not deterred?” the spokesman said.

“How about deadly and unpredictable undercurrents that can sweep away even the strongest of swimmers?”
