Police officer who shot man in scrotum still unable to work

A man who was shot in the scrotum by a Queensland police officer during an arrest that went wrong says buying a gun was the worst decision he has ever made.

Daniel Luke White-Mayne has written a letter of apology to the officer, who has suffered since the shooting in January 2017, the Brisbane Supreme Court heard today.

She and a male officer, whose identities have been suppressed, tried to arrest White-Mayne in the underground car park of a Surfers Paradise apartment block, next to the Gold Coast police headquarters when shots were fired.

During sentencing submissions on Thursday, the court heard the female officer had injured her back and continued to suffer psychologically and financially.

Defence barrister Angus Edwards told the court White-Mayne worried his apology was "inadequate" after reading the injured officer's victim impact statement.

Receiving the letter, Justice Martin Burns said: "It is regrettable that it comes so late."

White-Mayne was acquitted by a Supreme Court jury in May of trying to kill the policewoman, but was instead found guilty of attempted striking to resist arrest.

Justice Burns will hand down the sentence on November 8.

During the trial the female officer said she and her partner had gone to arrest White-Mayne, believing he was carrying stolen items in a bag.

He violently struggled with the officers before grabbing a revolver from his bag. 

She said she drew her firearm as White-Mayne had his gun pointed at her head.

She fired at White-Mayne four times, hitting him twice, with one bullet puncturing his thigh and scrotum and another going through his foot before her police-issued weapon jammed.

After falling to his knees, White-Mayne fired a single shot at the officer.
