Queensland government reaches pay agreement with nurses and midwives union

The Queensland government has reached a pay agreement with the state's nurses and midwives union after months of negotiations.

The agreement will deliver an 11 per cent rise over three years, including an immediate three per cent rise backdated to April, 2.5 per cent each year over the next two years and then another three per cent at the end of 2027.

The offer is the biggest wage increase for Queensland Health nurses and midwives since 2012 and puts most nurses and midwives on nation-leading pay.

The deal also includes double-time pay for overtime for all shift workers.

"With a sensible approach, we've been able to meet and come to this consensus," health minister Tim Nicholls said.

Union leaders have approved the offer and members will vote next week.

"Every nurse and midwife in Queensland Health will see improvements in their pay and conditions as a result of this offer," Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union secretary Sarah Beaman said.

"This will have over 70 per cent of nurses and midwives having nation-leading pay.

"We then throw in the improvements in conditions and improvements in entitlements."

The resolution comes after 46 meetings over eight months.

"It has been long, it has been robust however I think that we have something now that shows that the government has listened to nurses and midwives," Beaman said.
