The unlikely black market surrounding Brisbane's dumps

An unlikely Brisbane black market is doing the rounds online.

Brisbane City Council ratepayers are on-selling their unwanted waste vouchers and business is booming.

A quick search of marketplaces like Gumtree and eBay reveals dozens of ads, with some sellers charging just $2 for a single coupon and up to $200 for a pack of 60.

Each Brisbane household receives ten vouchers for 100 kilograms each of general waste every year, saving the user about $120 in dump fees.

But council warns profiting off the vouchers is illegal.

"It's unfortunate a small number of people are choosing to take advantage of Council's generosity and misuse the vouchers," Council's Field Service Chair Vicki Howard said. 

But Councillor Jared Cassidy argues the current system needs an overhaul.

"These vouchers aren't a form of generosity, people are already paying for the use of dumps through rates so we need to get away from blaming people for trying to access something they're already paying for and look at a whole new system."
