Baby giraffe statue stolen from Brisbane front yard

Police are searching for a stolen baby giraffe, it's not something you hear everyday but this isn't your average theft.

Resident Kon Voulcaris, 63, said thieves jumped the front fence of his Deception Bay home north of Brisbane with tools and unscrewed the statue from a concrete slab.

The four-foot tall fibreglass baby giraffe was stolen from underneath its 12-foot mother which was left behind.

Mr Voulcaris said his dog started barking at the window about 8.30pm on Saturday.

"Then I heard this thumping noise but I never thought much of it," Mr Voulcaris said.

On Sunday he noticed the baby giraffe was missing.

"It was bolted down on the ground and they undone the nuts."

Mr Voulcaris told 9News his garden is more than a sanctuary, it is his saviour, keeping him occupied through an injury that cost him his job, a marriage breakdown and depression.

He just wants the ornament to be returned in one piece.

Police are looking into the theft as one of a number of similar offences in the area over several weeks.

Gnomes, owls and eagles were stolen from Kate Brown's yard - one of four targeted in Deception Bay in the last week.

Most of the items are worth less than $100 but are priceless to their rightful owners.
