Queensland animal rescue shelters inundated with abandoned pandemic pets

Queensland rescue shelter employees say they are inundated with rescue pets, as people abandon animals purchased during last year's lockdowns.

The RSPCA says there's been an increase in owners giving up their pets, with a 20 per cent spike compared to previous years.

"We're very much full at the moment," RSPCA animal care manager Tessa Van De Sandt said.

"Across Queensland we're really struggling to find space, shuffling animals around from different shelters.

"It's quite sad and it can be quite emotional seeing all these guys come in."

She added pandemic buying could be behind the trend, with animals purchased for company during lockdown now turned into the RSPCA.

"Since the crisis has started, a lot of people have been unable to look after their pets at the moment," Ms Van De Sandt said.

She added lifestyle changes during the pandemic and returning to work may contribute to pet owners skirting their responsibilities.

The RSPCA urges anyone considering adoption to check out their website or visit a local shelter.

"It's a lifelong commitment you really need to understand that it is like having a child," one visitor to the RSPCA's rescue centre said.
