Queensland man who holidayed in Philippines hit with child abuse material charges

A Queensland man is facing up to 15 years in prison after he travelled to the Philippines and returned home with alleged child abuse material on his mobile phone.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers stopped and searched the 25-year-old when he touched down last Thursday at Brisbane International Airport.

During the examination of the man's baggage, a mobile phone he was carrying was allegedly identified as containing child abuse material.

A search warrant was executed at the man's home in Harristown, Toowoomba, with investigators seizing electronic devices which were taken away for forensic examination.

Officers from Brisbane Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team charged the man with three online child abuse-related offences. He was remanded in custody.

"This arrest should serve as a warning that law enforcement is dedicated to fighting child sexual abuse and bringing those who commit these offences before the court," Australian Federal Police senior constable Stacey Ward said.

"Our investigators are relentless in their pursuit of anyone creating or sharing child abuse material."

The man is expected to appear in court today, charged with possessing or controlling child abuse material obtained or accessed by using a carriage service, and using a carriage service for sexual activity with a person under 16 years of age.

The maximum penalty for these offences is 15 years' imprisonment.
