Man killed in light plane crash in north Queensland

One man has been killed after a light plane crashed in bushland south of Townsville, Queensland, today.

Police launched a search for the missing plane, which had been scheduled to land in Ayr, at about 9.30am.

Aerial searchers spotted the wrecked vehicle in bush near Shirbourne, north-west of its intended destination.

The pilot, the sole occupant of the plane, was found dead at the scene.

The Forensic Crash Unit will investigate the circumstances of the accident.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
