Man dies after alleged assault at Perth train station

A 70-year-old man has been allegedly bashed to death at a train station in Perth.

Alan Thomas, who was intellectually disabled, was allegedly attacked on his way to work at a charity shop this morning.

Emergency crews were called to Queens Park Station just before 6am after reports two men were fighting.

On arrival, police found Mr Thomas with serious injuries.

They attempted CPR before he was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he died from his injuries a short time later.

A 52-year-old Mount Claremont man has been charged with murder after almost 12 hours in custody. He is due to face court tomorrow.

It is understood that Mr Thomas did not know his alleged killer.

Police found a number of Mr Thomas' personal belongings — a cap, a Christmas present and a packed lunch — strewn on the train tracks.

One of Mr Thomas' neighbours described him as a kind man who didn't let his disabilities hold him back.

"(He) was willing to help everybody," a visibly shaken Michael Papas told 9News

"Friendly as, never hurt a person or anybody. He'd be the first person to come and help you do anything.

"I'm disgusted ... I'm pretty angry actually ... everybody in my family knows him ... my mother was in tears."

The alleged fight caused disruptions to Armadale and Thornlie train services between Armadale and Victoria Park, with replacement buses called in and delays lasting for hours.

Services returned to normal just before midday.
