Queensland domestic violence operation sees offending cut in half

An operation by Queensland Police targeting repeat domestic violence offenders has lead to a 50 per cent reduction in offending.

Operation Tango Alessa ranked and targeted the top 100 offenders in five districts, allowing a specialist team of officers to intercept them before they hit crisis point.

Domestic, Family Violence and Vulnerable Persons Command acting Superintendent Ben Martain said offending during the two-month operation dropped by half.

"What we looked to do was make it very known to those perps that we were watching them," Superintendent Martain said.

"We've potentially avoided serious family and domestic violence occurring within communities.

"We were intending on having them come to a turning point in their life."

Senior police say legally they are unable to reveal a person's prior domestic violence offences to a new partner.

Superintendent Martain said the notion of a state-wide domestic violence registry was "promising".

Sue Clarke, the mother of Hannah Clarke, who was murdered along with her three children by her estranged husband, said any step forward was a step in the right direction.

"If there's a problem about privacy you should be able to ask your partner if it's okay to have a look and if they have nothing to hide then they shouldn't have a problem," she said.
