Former Olympic diving legend Chantelle Newbery has broken her silence on her battle with drugs and depression.

In an exclusive interview with Tracy Grimshaw for Channel Nine’s A Current Affair, the Athens gold medal winner revealed why she pleaded guilty to drug charges.

“I pleaded guilty on the time because I was overwhelmed on the day. I was hysterical,” she told the program.

Earlier this month the 37-year-old was placed on a drug diversion program after admitting possession of a quantity of methylamphetamine and failing to properly dispose of syringes.

It marked a dramatic fall from grace for the former golden girl of Aussie diving.

“I had never been in trouble with the law before,” she told Tracy Grimshaw. And she admitted: “They did find drug paraphernalia.”

In the exclusive interview – to be shown on Monday night – the diver also discusses her battle with depression, and reveals her plan to get back on top.
