Worst traffic spots in SE Qld revealed

Motorists in southeast Queensland are crawling at speeds as low as 19km/h during peak times on major motorways.

Data obtained by the state's peak motoring body has revealed the southeast's worst "choke points" where motorists were forced to drive well under the speed limit during their morning and afternoon commutes last month.

The slowest outbound crawl was on the Pacific Motorway, south from Herschel St to Woolloongabba, where motorists averaged speeds of 19km/h in the afternoon peak.

The Western Freeway, south of the Toowong roundabout, was the worst inbound road to be on in the mornings as motorists reached speeds of just 23km/h, according to the Department of Transport and Main Roads data.

RACQ spokesman Paul Turner said the statistics highlighted the full extent of Brisbane's congestion problems.

"It's unacceptable for major road corridors in Brisbane to be this congested, forcing drivers to travel so slowly every day," he said.

There needed to be a strategic plan to provide viable alternatives for motorists travelling on key corridors in southeast Queensland, he said.

AM PEAK

* Western Fwy, inbound 1.5km south of Toowong roundabout to Miskin St: 23km/h

* Ipswich Mwy, inbound Harcourt Rd to Oxley Road: 27km/h

* Bruce Hwy, inbound Anzac Avenue to Murrumba Downs: 27km/h

PM PEAK

* Pacific Mwy, outbound south from Herschel St to Woolloongabba: 19km/h

* Western Fwy, outbound Moggill Rd to Fig Tree Pocket Rd: 30km/h

* Western Fwy, outbound 1.5km south of Toowoong to Moggill Rd: 32km/h
