Police are appealing for anyone who heard "screams" in an inner-Brisbane suburb overnight to come forward, after a woman was found dead in an apartment.

The 68-year-old's body was discovered early Thursday morning at a Kangaroo Point unit block by a man who was known to her and had been staying at the residence.

Detective Inspector Tony Geary said police were treating the death as potentially suspicious and appealed for anyone who heard a disturbance or "screams or anything of the like" between 8pm and 5.30am (AEST) to come forward.

He said the man who had found the woman in one of the unit's rooms had been assisting police.

"The gentleman that reported and located her deceased has been assisting us with our enquiries as have a number of other people," Det Insp Geary said, adding the man was still with police on Thursday afternoon.

Pressed to say if he would be free to go in coming hours, Det Insp Geary would only say: "Quite possibly".

He wouldn't say how the two knew each other but said they were quite well acquainted.

He refused to speculate on the woman's cause of death and said a post-mortem was due to be carried out on Friday morning.

A crime scene has now been established at the Goodwin Street complex.
