NT woman crushed by tree dies in Cairns

A Darwin woman has died in hospital after being crushed by a falling palm tree in far north Queensland last week.

The "very large" palm tree was weakened by termites and crushed the woman when a huge gust of wind blew it over, leaving her with serious head, chest and limb injuries.

Paramedics described the incident in Cairns as "a freak accident".

Police have now confirmed the woman passed away in Cairns Hospital over the weekend.

The woman had been waiting outside a unit block in Freshwater on Thursday when the incident occurred.

She was in Cairns visiting her daughter.
