Woman charged over racist online tirade

An Ipswich woman has been charged with launching a racist online attack against a Muslim refugee.

Police are alleging the 22-year-old woman from Collingwood Park used social media to attack human rights activist Mariam Veiszadeh, who fled Afghanistan when she was a child.

The online abuse was allegedly sparked when Ms Veiszadeh wrote about her dismay that a store in far north Queensland was selling a singlet featuring the Australian flag and the words, "love it or leave", the Brisbane Times reports.

The woman allegedly responded by calling Ms Veiszadeh a rag-head, and told her to return to her "sand dune country".

Police have confirmed the woman has been charged with one count of using a carriage service to menace, harrass or cause offence.

She will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on March 3.
