Massive storms lash southeast Queensland

Parts of the South-East are picking up the pieces after being thumped by severe thunderstorms, with rapid rising floodwaters inundating roads and properties.

The deluge yesterday afternoon brought record rain and giant hail from Wide Bay through to the Gold Coast.

"We are responding to around a hundred jobs that have been reported to council the majority of these are related to trees, so fallen trees, fallen tree branches, there are also 75 SES jobs," Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, told reporters.

Areas near Maryborough copped 13 centimetre hail while the Gold Coast was dealt a once in a lifetime downpour.

"We saw 93mm in 30 minutes which does meet our critera for a one in 100-year event," Bureau of Meteorology's Rosa Hoff told 9News.

The wild weather caused flash flooding in basements and problems for some businesses.

"This church has been here for 60 or 70 years and we've never had water through the church," Southport Uniting Church's Ian Lord told 9News.

"So, we'll be working here all day and of course we've got to move these big heavy pews."

Despite the heavy downpour barely any reached the state's dams and does not look likely to any time soon.

"We are expecting temperatures to climb into the 40s, reaching up to the high 40s, particularly in-land," Ms Hoff said.
