Sea World rescue team frees trapped whale off Gold Coast beach

A Sea World team has freed another whale tangled in nets off a Gold Coast beach.

Video from the 9NEWS chopper showed the whale struggling in the nets off Kirra beach as rescuers worked to untangle its tail.

Last week the same rescue team managed to free a whale stranded off the same beach.

On the previous Sunday a very young humpback whale died after getting caught in shark nets off Bilinga Beach, also on the Gold Coast.

The whale’s mother was visibly distressed as her calf drowned.

The death sparked renewed calls for shark nets to be removed during winter.
