WA likely to avoid Christmas cyclone

Western Australia is likely dodge a Christmas Day cyclone, with a tropical low no longer expected to intensify before reaching landfall.

A cyclone watch has been cancelled for Cape Leveque to De Grey, including Broome, with forecasters no longer expecting ex-Cyclone Yvette to redevelop.

The system was some 480km northwest of Broome on Saturday morning and tracking towards the coast at 14km/h.

While the low isn't expected to re-intensify before reaching the West Kimberley coast on Christmas Day, it may still bring damaging winds up to 100km/h and heavy rains that may lead to flash flooding.

A severe weather warning is in place for Broome, Beagle Bay, Bidyadanga, Cape Leveque and Lombadina.

There has already been wild weather in the state's north, with Broome experiencing its wettest December day on Thursday with 226mm of rainfall.

A severe weather warning has also been issued for the North Interior and parts of the Kimberley and South Interior districts, with heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding and damaging winds.

Heavy rain is already falling in the south Kimberley and North Interior and is expected to extend into the South Interior on Saturday, while conditions in the Kimberley will gradually ease as a low moves south.

Flood warnings are also current for parts of the Kimberley and North Interior districts.
