Two Qld cops charged with perjury, assault

Two Queensland police officers have been charged with perjury and common assault over the "preventable" death of a university student who had water poured over him while he was out cold.

Bond University student Charlie Robertson, 19, died at his Nobby Beach unit on the Gold Coast on June 13, 2015.

A 2017 coroner's inquest into his death found he had taken a mixture of drugs, including GHB, cocaine and ecstasy.

The inquest heard that seven officers from the Rapid Action Patrol unit on the Gold Coast raided the unit at 6.30am and found Mr Robertson asleep in the master bedroom.

Police used a number measures to try to rouse him over a 90 minute period that included shining a torch on him, pouring water over him, pinching and rubbing his chest and lifting his mattress.

None were successful.

Coroner Terry Ryan wrote in his findings: "The sound of laughter while Charlie fell from the mattress reflects very poorly on the officers involved.

"I accept, however, that there is insufficient evidence that this particular incident contributed to Charlie's death in any way."

However, the coroner also wrote "I find that Charlie's death was preventable in the circumstances".

Paramedics were on the property but were not called to assess him, the inquest heard.

Police left around 8.30am, leaving Mr Robertson in the company of three teenage girls, all minors, without seeking medical treatment.

Both officers charged are senior constables, one a 57-year-old man and the other a 30-year-old man, from the South Eastern Region.

They have been stood down and are due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 9.
