Two men killed were father and son: police

A father and son found dead in an apparent murder-suicide during a target shooting trip in central Queensland both worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

An RFDS statement identified the men as "much-loved" pilot Greg McNaughton and his son Tim, while another employee of the service was injured in the incident.

Tim was an apprentice engineer on leave from the organisation's Alice Springs base, its statement said.

After searching a 50-acre rural property in Rockhampton on Tuesday afternoon, police found the bodies of the men, both with fatal gunshot wounds, at around 10pm.

"All of us at the Royal Flying Doctor Service are deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of this terrible tragedy in Rockhampton," chief executive Nino Di Marco said.

He said a third man who suffered a gunshot wound to his arm in the incident was also a pilot.

The distraught 53-year-old spoke to police at a neighbouring property before being taken to the Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition.

"I will say we are investigating what we believe to be a murder-suicide and that we are not searching for any further people," Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said on Wednesday.

The men were target shooting at the property and there was nothing to suggest the crime was premeditated, he said.

A rifle recovered from the scene was registered.

Meanwhile, the recovering man has been interviewed several times in hospital.

"I can say that they are close friends of his, so obviously it is a very distressing time for him as well and for his family," Det Insp Shadlow said.

He declined to say whether the injured man tried to intervene.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on the deceased men on Wednesday.
