Tully seeks to replace Pisasale in Ipswich

The race to replace embattled former Ipswich Major Paul Pisasale has begun, with the city's longest-serving councillor confirming he will vie for the job.

Acting Ipswich Mayor Paul Tully's declaration follows the shock resignation of Pisasale, who was on Wednesday granted bail in the Brisbane Magistrates Court over several charges including extortion.

An election for Pisasale's replacement is expected to be held sometime around August.

Announcing his intentions, Mr Tully said he didn't think the scandal surrounding the former mayor would hurt his own chances to become the city's leader.

He said he expected a "Melbourne Cup field" of mayoral candidates.

Mr Tully was first elected to Ipswich council in 1979 as its youngest member.
