Truckie jailed over fatal north Qld crash

A truckie has been sentenced to two years' jail for causing a crash that killed a British tourist in north Queensland in 2011.

Jurors found Carlos Javier Madiero Martinez, 50, guilty of dangerous driving causing death after a four-day trial in the Cairns District Court.

He was given a two-year sentence by Judge John Robertson late on Thursday afternoon.

During the trial the court heard that in October 2011 Martinez's truck veered across the road while travelling north on the Captain Cook Highway near Oak Beach north of Cairns.

The truck collided with an oncoming car driven by a British man who was holidaying in the far north with his wife.

He suffered serious injuries and later died in hospital. His wife, who was in the passenger seat, was also injured but survived the crash.

Martinez, who was also disqualified from driving for three years, will be eligible for parole in March 2016.
