Tributes flow for killed Qld paramedic

A Queensland paramedic and father of two killed when his ambulance crashed on route to an emergency had touched many hearts in his life and work.

Craig McCulloch, 32, was an excellent paramedic who had worked with Queensland Ambulance Service for about 10 years, QAS commissioner Russell Bowles said.

"He leaves behind a young family and partner and this has been very sad difficult for people within the ambulance service to deal with," he told reporters on Tuesday.

He touched a lot of hearts having worked in many locations across Queensland, Mr Bowles said.

Mr McCulloch was killed when the ambulance he was driving rolled and crashed near Mackay early on Monday.

Bystanders and responding paramedics tried to save Mr McCulloch but he died at the scene in Benholme.

The father-of-two, who lived on the Gold Coast but travelled to north Queensland for work, was the only person in the ambulance when it crashed on a wet road.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also paid tribute to the young dad.

"My deepest sympathies to the family of Ambulance Officer Craig McCulloch," she wrote on Twitter.

"Craig, a father with a young family, died trying to save the life of another. A reminder of the dangers our emergency workers face every day."

LNP leader Deb Frecklington echoed the sentiments.

"My heartfelt thoughts go out to the family and friends of this hard-working ambulance officer," she told reporters.
