Tram-track driver charged on Gold Coast

A driver has been charged after speeding along tram tracks on the Gold Coast, before roaring the wrong way down Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.

Panicked members of the public called police just before 9pm (AEST) on Thursday, after watching the man driving his white ute along tram tracks before crashing into another vehicle on Chevron Island.

It's alleged he then took off again, and drove at high speed the wrong way down Cavill Avenue, before a police officer arrested him at a roadworks site.

The 47-year-old has been charged with dangerous driving and unlicensed driving, and will front court later this month.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the drama.
