Thief uses hammer to smash jewel store

A thief has made off with dozens of rings and watches after using a hammer to smash the window of a Gold Coast jewellery store.

The man first broke into a shopping complex at Southport around 4am on Tuesday before then smashing his way into the shop.

Police are still compiling an inventory of the missing items, but an initial estimate puts the loss at around $20,000.
