Teens steal car in Aurukun

A group of teenage boys in Aurukun have stolen a car after threatening the driver with knives and machetes, just two weeks after an attack on the local school principal.

Police say the group of three or four boys forced a man out of his car on Saturday night and drove it dangerously until it became bogged on the outskirts of the Cape York community and they ran off.

Police are still looking for the group but the driver and his female passenger were not physically injured.

The incident bears similarities to the May 8 attack on the principal of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy, who was threatened with an axe by a group of teens and forced to hand over the keys to his car.

Twenty five teachers from the school were evacuated from the community following that attack and the school was closed for five days.

Extra police have also been deployed to the town.

Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said the community was working with police to reduce violence in the town.

"These types of incidents are not indicative of the wider Aurukun community," he said in a statement.

"We are working in partnership with the people of Aurukun and community leaders to try to prevent crime."
