Teen's body found in search at Qld quarry

A teenager's body has been recovered from a quarry where he drowned more than a week ago.

Duncan Wilmott's body was found 32 metres below the surface in the water-filled quarry at Collingwood Park, near Ipswich, on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old disappeared under water while swimming there with mates on January 25.

Inspector Michael Ede said the teen's family was distraught and had requested their privacy be respected as they grappled with their loss.

Duncan's father, Ryan Wilmott, had described Duncan as "his best mate" in a heartfelt message on Facebook and members of the family had reportedly held a waterside vigil after the drowning.

Specialist divers spent days searching the quarry floor, which is littered with obstacles including wrecked cars, trees and large boulders.

Insp Ede urged members of the public to consider Duncan's drowning when deciding where to swim.

"We request that they swim in patrolled areas where there are volumes of people," he said.

"Places like this, on private property, have the dangers of submerged objects and emergency services can't access these areas in a quick fashion."

The NSW police dive squad assisted with the search as Queensland police divers are only able to dive 30 metres under the surface.
